Bob was the sports editor at the Grand Rapids Press for 29 years and retired in 2007. He put Macker in the headlines starting with the early days in Lowell when the guys simply called him and suggested he have a reporter and photographer check out this 3-on-3 tournament in Lowell. Becker loved it, and regularly assigned multiple reporters and photographers to cover the tournament with features, columns, picture stories and even game stories from the Top Men's and Women's courts. When the original tournament moved to Belding, he talked a family friend who lived there into housing reporters. Reporters Howie Beardsley, Greg Johnson, Joe Conklin and Gary Bond spent nights on Mrs. Setchfield's porch covering the Macker up close and personal. Bob was invited to Belding in 2007 to shoot the do-or-die shot to start the tournament. Of course, he made it, and then was told he was going into the Macker Hall of Fame in 2008.
