Gus Macker Tournament returning to Elkhart for second consecutive year
February 27, 2019
ELKHART (February 27, 2019) – The City of Elkhart’s busy event season will kick-off in May with the return of the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. The tournament will be held May 18-19 in the parking lot of Woodland Crossing Shopping Center, located at 138 West Hively Avenue in Elkhart.
Mayor Tim Neese is excited for Elkhart to host the event for the second consecutive year and hopes to exceed last year’s registration numbers, which reached almost 100 teams.
“This year’s Gus Macker tournament will be our first big event of the year,” Neese said. “I am proud that my administration has been able to bring so many new events to the City as well as old favorites. As I attend these events, you can sense the pride that participants feel in being a part of something new and fun in Elkhart. The Gus Macker Tournament in particular is an excellent opportunity to engage a cross-section of the community and give back to local organizations who help make our City a better place.”
The tournament is designed for basketball players of all ages and experience levels. Teams are computer-matched into male and female divisions in one of three categories: Junior, Adult, or Top. The age, height, and experience of all four players are considered in bracketing.
Teams receive at least three scheduled games each tournament. The format is a double-elimination tournament with a consolation bracket historically called “The Toilet Bowl” for teams that lose the first two games. This family- friendly event will also include vendors, including food, as well as a Kids Zone.
Registration is $120 per team of four and can be completed online at www.macker.com/elkhart-in. The deadline to register by mail is April 26. Online registrations will be accepted through April 29. Bleachers will be limited to certain courts, so spectators should bring folding chairs.
The event is made possible through the cooperation of the City of Elkhart Parks and Recreation Department and River Oaks Community Church. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Guidance Ministries and SPA Women’s Ministry Homes.
Since 1974, there have been 1,421 sanctioned Gus Macker Tournaments presented for over 670,800 teams, or almost 2.7 million players, and played in front of over 27.5 million spectators. For more information, visit www.macker.com/
