MACKER MADNESS III – Indoor Gus Macker Basketball to open at a new venue for 2019: MSA Fieldhouse.
GRAND RAPIDS – For the third consecutive year winter is sure to end and Gus Macker Basketball will start indoors with a 1 day tournament. But this year there is a new venue: MSA Fieldhouse.
Save the date: March 16, in the middle of basketball’s “March Madness.”
Family fun three-on-three basketball in the true Gus Macker fashion with all ages invited and involved is set. This March you don’t have to just watch basketball – you can play, too.
Macker trophies, Macker excitement and Macker action with registered officials will take place on the shiny hardwood courts at MSA Fieldhouse, 5435 28th St Ct SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546
“This was really a response from previous years to the Macker Maniacs of all ages who kept asking us to have an indoor tournament, and since “March Madness” has them all fired up to play we figure it is a great way to warm up for our 2019 Gus Macker World Tour,” Gus Macker, a.k.a. Scott McNeal, said in announcing the tournament.
“Last year families came out, we had a great response and the MSA facilities are really sweet. The focus of Gus Macker Basketball remains on our summer outdoor family three-on-three basketball festivals, but this is a good way to start working on our games. We are going to get everybody warmed up.”
The format of the typical Macker tournament remains the same with our computer breaking down the competitive divisions using age, height and experience to create brackets of fun. Trophies and medals, just like those awarded at summer tournaments, are awarded for first through third place on each court with the all-important Sportsmanship and Toilet Bowl included.
Registration for some of the 2019 Macker World Tour is open at macker.com. That is also where players can register for the Macker Madness at MSA Fieldhouse by clicking on the GR Indoor Tournament tab.
Over the years Gus Macker has presented over 1,400 tournaments for over 2.6 million players, male and female, from ages 7 to 50-plus. An estimated 27 million spectators have witnessed the community-minded basketball festivals and helped raised countless charitable dollars.
The first Macker was presented in a Lowell, Mich., driveway by brothers Scott and Mitch McNeal on spring break in 1974 with 16 friends making up six, three-player teams. It grew in fun and numbers into a neighborhood festival and eventually a phenomenon launched to national fame by a July 8, 1985 story in Sports Illustrated by Alexander Wolff. In 1987 Gus Macker Basketball expanded from a single tournament to a national tour.
