Gus Macker – The Original 3-on-3 Basketball Festival of Family Fun!

This is the 4th year that the Fenton Regional Chamber of Commerce (FRCC) will organize a Gus Macker Tournament for the Linden community.  The FRCC is the Chamber for Linden and organizes many events in the area.  “We are excited about the energy that has surrounded these tournaments and we are especially proud of our continued growth in the Linden tournament” said Shelly Day, FRCC Executive Director.  The end goal is to turn this into a festival-type event where the 3-on-3 basketball tournament is just one of the many attractions that bring people to our beautiful and historic Linden Community.

The charity efforts are aimed at helping the Linden Schools Athletic and Music Booster organizations raise funds to support their initiatives.  By involving the kids from our local high school we not only encourage community involvement it also helps promote the event as well as economic growth.  “The kids have done a great job for us over the last four years.  They get excited about being involved and many of the organizations choose the same job each year like: event set-up, score keeping, garbage pick-up, just to name a few” said Russ Ciesielski, Linden Schools Superintendant and Gus Macker Chairman.  Over $3,000 goes back directly to the Boosters to invest in the kids!

This year the tournament will move to a new location due to growth of the event.  The event will be held at Linden Elementary School, 400 Bridge Street, Linden, MI 48451.  “We have grown this event adding a minimum of 20 teams of 4 each year”, replied Linda Hathaway, Co-Chair of the Gus Macker Event.  “The Linden Elementary Campus will allow us to set-up more basketball units, it will tighten up the venue to create more energy and it will bring us closer to the downtown businesses” added Linda.  The cafeteria will be used for registration.  Courts will be in the parking lot and the Kids Zone will be on the front lawn of the school grounds.  There is plenty of front row seating with this lay-out for families to erect their “site-camp”.  Hyatt Elementary will be used for event parking and is a short walk to event festivities.

The city was named after the Linden tree and our tree represents the rich history of our city.  The tree also represents the “grow” attitude of all that we do to bring people and grow business in our downtown.  The Shiawassee River flows through the heart of downtown Linden and creates our millpond; the site of our historical Linden Mills building.  Linden boasts a rich history as an early mill center during the development of the buggy and cement industries, and is home to historical and commercial structures that emphasize the city’s unique charm. The Chamber’s Grow Linden Committee is proud to help support the efforts of this event!

Special Events is an added attraction for players and those attending.  “It’s a way for everyone to be a part of the Macker event”, said Lee Mitchell FRCC Events Coordinator. Competitions in the Special Events schedule will run every hour throughout the tournament and include Free-Throw contests, Bank Shot contests, and Three-Point contests. Spectators of family and friends are also able to enjoy the festivities of the tournament by indulging themselves at our on-site Food Court, along with use of indoor facilities for eating and restrooms to allow for a place to cool off, rest, or take shelter from any inclement weather.

With the tournament being completely housed on school property, no city streets will be blocked for the tournament. However, S. Bridge St. will be diminished down to one lane due to road construction, so access to Stan Eaton Dr. in order to enter the parking lot at Hyatt Elementary will potentially have slow traffic flow. An alternative route to the parking lot on Stan Eaton Dr. can be followed by turning down Hyatt Lane off of Silver Lake Rd.

We hope that the quaint charm of Linden will continue to capture the hearts of Macker enthusiasts, and help to build a solid foundation for a legendary tournament that will grow and bring joy to many people for years to come!
